The last set of molars in our mouths, more commonly known as the wisdom teeth, is a remnant of times when humankind had to eat much tougher foods. Since then, we’ve outgrown the need to grind out food to oblivion to get the nutrients out, and now the wisdom teeth can cause many different issues if they grow in improperly.

Our mouths are smaller than they were when we needed the wisdom teeth, so they can cause many problems if allowed to grow in improperly. They can crowd your teeth together, misaligning your bite and making it hard to clean around and between them. They might not be able to grow in properly, and open a flap of gum tissue above them that can get infected, or a cyst might form around them that can damage the roots or the bone around them.

As you prepare to get them removed, Dr. Aaron Ercole will take x-rays to determine how best to remove them. The procedure is different based on whether the teeth are still impacted in the jaw or if they have erupted. Our dentist will numb the area where the tooth will be removed, and may also use a general anesthetic so you sleep through the surgery. If the tooth is impacted or difficult to remove, he may cut the tooth into pieces for easier removal.
