Over the course of the last two decade dental implants have slowly started to become a new standard for replacing or restoring the full oral function of people who have lost one or more teeth. At first dental implants were only used to replace a single missing tooth. Since that time dental implant technology and techniques has continued to evolve. Today, dental implants can also be used in a variety of other applications, including anchoring a bridge or creating anchor points that can secure removable dentures.

At the initial consultation Ocean State Oral Surgery Center, L.L.C. will examine your mouth and take a few X-rays. This helps assess the overall health of your mouth and to ensure you have sufficient jaw structure. If you have had chronic gum disease, tooth decay, or tooth extractions that resulted in a loss of bone structure, we might recommend a bone graft procedure. Grafting new bone material into your jaw will restore sufficient structure to anchor an implant.

The implant procedure is usually performed outpatient basis. Most people choose to be deeply sedated for their own comfort. This means you will need to arrange to have someone drive you and help you at home, while you’re recovering.

During the procedure a small incision is made in your gums to gain direct access to your jawbone. A narrow channel is made in the bone and a titanium abutment is screwed into place. Titanium is known to be biologically safe and will eventually fuse to your bones to create a very strong anchor.

Once your gums have healed and the implant has been integrated into your jaw structure, Ocean State Oral Surgery Center, L.L.C. will fit the implanted abutment with a crown or other piece of dental work.
